Choosing Redis messaging primitives for delivery guarantees.

Pub/Sub is a low-latency broadcast mechanism, but messages are not retained for disconnected subscribers. Redis Streams persist entries and support consumer groups, pending entries, acknowledgements, and replay.

For jobs that must be retried, use Streams or a queue library with explicit acknowledgement and dead-letter handling. Make workers idempotent because retries can happen after a worker completes work but before its acknowledgement reaches Redis.

Check your understanding

  1. 1. What happens to a Redis Pub/Sub message if no subscriber is connected?

  2. 2. Which Redis feature supports durable consumer groups and acknowledgements?

  3. 3. Why should queue workers be idempotent?
