UPI, designed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), is an interoperable instant real-time payment protocol. It operates as a 4-party model: 1. Payer / Remitter Bank: Houses the debtor's account. 2. Payee / Beneficiary Bank: Houses the creditor's account. 3. Payer & Payee PSPs (Payment Service Providers): Third-Party Application Providers (TPAP like PhonePe, Google Pay, BHIM). 4. NPCI Central UPI Switch: The Layer-7 routing, authorization, security, and settlement engine.
Virtual Payment Addresses (VPAs / UPI IDs like `alice@okhdfcbank`) abstract away underlying 16-digit bank account numbers and IFSC routing codes.
