To prevent blockchain state bloat, accounts must maintain a minimum lamport balance proportional to their allocated byte size. Accounts holding at least 2 years worth of rent are 'rent-exempt' and will never be purged. Modern Solana clusters require all newly created accounts to be rent-exempt.
