1. Why retrieval-augmented generation exists

Ground answers in your own documents instead of model memory.

AI translates the explanation and quiz text while preserving code and answer scoring.

A model's weights are a frozen, lossy snapshot of the internet. RAG fixes that by retrieving relevant text at query time and putting it in the prompt, so answers are grounded, current, citable, and permission-aware.

The minimal pipeline: 1. Ingest — load documents, clean them, split into chunks. 2. Embed — turn each chunk into a vector. 3. Index — store vectors plus metadata in a vector store. 4. Retrieve — embed the question, fetch the nearest chunks (often plus keyword hits). 5. Generate — answer using only those chunks, with citations.

RAG beats fine-tuning for facts because you can update, delete, and access-control a document instantly — you cannot un-train a weight update the same way.

Gotcha: RAG does not stop hallucination by itself. You must instruct the model to answer *only* from the context and to say when the answer is not present.

How to study this topic

  1. 1. Read the explanation once end to end, skipping the code.
  2. 2. Re-read the code snippets and say out loud what each line does.
  3. 3. Answer the quiz without scrolling back — that is the real check.
  4. 4. Read every explanation, even for the answers you got right.

Scoring

  • · Up to 30 XP from quiz accuracy.
  • · +15 XP for a perfect first attempt.
  • · +5 XP while a 3-day streak is running.
  • · 75% or higher marks the topic complete.

Check your understanding

  1. 1. What is the main advantage of RAG over fine-tuning for factual knowledge?

  2. 2. Which step converts text chunks into vectors?

  3. 3. Does adding retrieval alone remove hallucination?
